Timothy Matteson Utilitarianism 11-11-11
Utilitarianism is an ethical theory proposing one actions holds their overall happiness over everything else. In short happiness and please equals good, as long as happiness is within educated reason. This was not to neglect the consequences of the persons actions such as murder, theft, abuse which are consider unfashionable. The fore fathers of Utilitarianism are know as Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill.
Jeremy Bentham was an English jurist, philosopher, and legal and social reformer. Utilitarianism was described by Bentham as “the greatest happiness principle”
Being born from (1748-1832) his philosophical principles contributed to the American constitution and its democratic values. Bentham influenced American Liberalism from his contribution in his Utilitarianism philosophy. Bentham Principles of Legistration focus on the morality that ties into legistration practice and the focus on utility. His beliefs. His beliefs is the happiness is what produces the most pleasure and good. unhappiness and discomfort produces the most evils.
Bentham being a law graduate explain how to the legistration government that punishment could either increases or decrease happiness (good vs. evil) on society. Bentham argues that suppression of evil acts may lead to even more radical acts such as the Drugs mobs resorting to violence to enforce their trade. Bentham also states that legistration should consider the greatest good for the great amount of people in which the legistration needs the measurement of pleasure and pains of their laws. The legistration of society is more important than self in Utilitarianism because the individuals “rights” may cause pain to others in his society; rights being referred to the constitution “rights to the pursuit of happiness”
John Stuart Mill was another key player in the utilitarian ideologies. Mill was born in 1806 and died in 1873. Mills father was an advocate of utilitarianism under Bentham academic leadership. Mill’s father goals for his son was to have him to be a genius and succeed his father and Bentham’s movement after both of have past away. Mill has contributed as well as deviated a little form Bentham Utilitarian theosophy.
Mills is widely know for his “greatest-happiness principle” which is for a being to produce the greatest amount of happiness for himself within reason. Mills elaborated more on intellectual and moral happiness much more than Bentham did. Mills believe that happiness is relative to that intervals experiences. Happiness may be hopscotch for one person and the opera house for the other. The person who is happier hop scotching only knows so because he is experience is limited. Mills with the previous example refers to a person education is important to ones happiness which feels that its is better to be a human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.
Mills view on a educated person perceptive on happiness also effected his views on politics. Mills pushed for college graduates to receive more voting power in the American democracy because they are able to judge was happiness really is, unlike uneducated people who are contempt with simple pleasures.
Bentham and Mills are both prominent figure of Utilitarianism philosophy that have attain strong connects to Hedonism. During Bentham and Mills time, a time of the American revolution has definitely effected the founding values of the United States as well as the modern Utilitarianism philosophy.
